Car Insurance
We are often asked if we can also arrange car insurance or tow car insurance. Although we don't, we do like to help our clients and the following information is provided to help you to make an informed decision.
Caravan insurance, including our own NIG underwritten policy, excludes third party liability while your caravan is attached to your tow car. It is therefore important to ensure that your car insurance provides this cover. One way to do this is to buy a car insurance policy that is specifically tailored to the needs of caravanners such as the Caravan Club's Car Insurance policy.
Another method is to short list car insurance on the basis of cost and then, before you take up the insurance ask the question, "am I covered to tow a caravan?". They will all explain that damage to your caravan is not covered but, in the vast majority of cases, that third party cover is provided for towing a trailer or caravan.
To create a short list you could try a price comparison site such as Confused.com or MoneySupermarket.com or try a large broker that has a panel of insurers to quote from such as the AA or Swinton. Or you could try a large direct insurer such as Direct Line.
Choosing a towcar
Most new caravan owners buy a caravan to suit their existing car but as you get into caravanning you will no doubt be faced, at some time, with the need to choose a new car to tow your caravan. Either way, it is important to match your car with a suitable caravan, or vice versa.
The Caravan Club’s choice of towcar leaflet is a bit technical but provides excellent information on choosing the right towcar for your caravan, or the other way around.
