Compare Caravan Insurance

Touring Caravan Insurance

Many insurance comparison sites focus on the price of the insurance but really price is the last thing you should be looking at. First of all look at the main cover provided, does this provide the coverage that you need. Next look at what significant or unusual exclusions there are. It is no good finding something that you assumed is covered is not when it is too late. Look for specific requirements such as security or under what circumstances certain items are covered.

For example most policies cover awnings but some only cover storm damage if the caravan is damaged at the same time. With our policy the awning is covered for storm damage even if there is no damage to the caravan.

The Caravanwise policy has sensible security precautions designed to help protect your caravan rather than catch you out. For single axle caravans we require that you use a hitch lock and a wheel clamp when the caravans is detached from the towing vehicle and is left unattended for more than two hours.

Each insurer should provide you with a summary of cover or key facts document that tells you the main cover provided and the main exclusions that apply. Not all cover or all exclusions will be detailed, some things are excluded on all similar policies or it is taken as common sense that you would not expect some things to be covered. All exclusions must be detailed in the insurance policy book. Insurance is a contract under which the insurance underwriter agrees to pay your valid claim for loss or damage to the thing, in this case touring caravan, that you have insured with them as detailed in the policy. They have obligations set out in the policy and equally there are requirements that you must comply with. No one can make you read the policy document but if you decide not to you may find, at a later date, that there are things that you assumed were covered that are not or requirements that you may not be complying with. This may cause you problems and it is difficult to make a complaint about something that you would have known about if you had read the policy. We always recommend that you read the policy and are on hand to point to the section of the policy that explains the cover you are enquiring about.

It is wise to choose an insurance provider that has experience in the touring caravan market. They will have ensured that the underwriter has written the important cover that you require into the policy.

Static Caravan Insurance

When you are comparing static caravan insurance many of the broad insurance information provided above applies but you need to consider your specific requirements as a holiday caravan owner. Does the policy allow you to rent out your caravan, are you covered for 3rd party liabilities that you may have towards other people who use your caravan, are you covered for loss of income or alternative accommodation if your caravan is unusable for a time and is the cover provided adequate for this purpose. You need to look at what the insurer requires in terms of security when you are not at the caravan, do you need to remove TVs etc when you are not in residence. Also what are the winterisation requirements.

Most of this is common sense but different underwriter's version of common sense may be somewhat different so it is always wise to read the policy to ensure that you understand what is covered and what you are required to do.

Folding Camper and Trailer Tent Insurance

Folding Campers and trailer tents are covered on the touring caravan insurance policy. The main difference is; we cannot arrange cover under this insurance policy for personal effects, valuables or audio and visual equipment because of the inherent lack of physical security in a trailer tent or folding camper. This might initially be cause for concern but you can usually buy additional cover for these things on your home contents insurance policy as "Personal Possessions Away from the Home" sometimes known as "all risks" cover. You need to speak to your household contents insurer to see if you already have this cover or to arrange to have it added. Also check what is covered and where it is covered. You will probably find that the cover is for "anywhere in the world" which includes inside and outside your camper. This is much better than any caravan contents cover would be because caravan contents are covered only while they are in the caravan.
