Caravan Liability Coverage

Insurance cover which offers protection against claims that allege that a property or vehicle owner's negligence or inappropriate action resulted in injury or property damage to another party.

In effect if someone makes a claim against you for damage that they allege you have done against them or their property then the insurer will handle the claim and make any settlement either agreed by the Underwriting company with the third party or which they are ordered to pay by a court.

For a towed caravan or trailer the liability element has to be covered by your car insurance when it is attached by any means to the car. This makes logical sense as it is your towing vehicle which is responsible for providing the propulsion and the trailer is unlikely to cause damage for which you would become liable whilst attached to the car unless it is moving, or stops moving quickly for example. When being towed on a public road it is a legal requirement under the Road Traffic Act and subsequent amendments that your caravan (or other trailer) is covered for a minimum level of third party liability by a motor insurance certificate. Only the company that provides the motor insurance certificate, for your car, can provide this cover and you need to check with them that it is not excluded. Most private motor policies include this cover as standard.

If your caravan or motorhome is damaged by a third party then the insurer will take steps to recover the cost of repairs or reinstatement from that third parties insurer. You will have to initially pay the excess but the other insurer should reimburse this to you once the claim is settled. The insurer has very competent people who endeavour to make full recoveries so that your no claims bonus is not affected and you are able to get your excess back.
